Battery Steele Observation Tower Plaque

Background

Built during World War II to protect Portland Harbor, Battery Steele was an installation on Peaks Island in Casco Bay that once held multiple gun emplacements that could fire twenty-six miles out to the Atlantic Ocean. Additionally, two fire control towers were also built on the island.

Naturally, Battery Steele and the two fire control towers also existed within the Spacetime Deviation, though at least one of them was converted into an observation tower, as it overlooked the nearby Cape Elizabeth Space Center.

Discovery

This transient object, a plaque once attached to the tower on Peaks Island, was discovered on January 9th, 1975 on the northern outskirts of Tizimín on the Yucatán Peninsula in Mexico. Arriving in a location with thick, dense tree cover and at a depth of nine feet, it took two days for the assigned Field Recovery Technician to recover the object.
